Health Coaching Q & A

What is health coaching?

Health coaching is a patient-centered approach to optimal health that encompasses mind, body, and spirit. Health coaching gives you the support and inspiration you need to make beneficial changes to your health that you haven’t been able to make on your own.

If you’ve been relying on your own willpower to lose those last 10 (or 50) pounds, whether it’s to manage your blood glucose levels or improve your arthritis, you may be frustrated.

Just as an athletic coach inspires athletes to push harder and achieve more than they could on their own, a health coach inspires you to stay on track until you achieve your self-identified goals.

How does health coaching work?

Health coaching is about empowering you to take charge of your health and then giving you the tools and support that you need to achieve your goals.

As a functional medicine practitioner, Dr. Ola sees herself as your partner in health, not your “boss.” She doesn’t tell you what to do: She helps you identify your own goals and works with you to develop a strategy that allows you to achieve them.

Do I undergo tests for health coaching?

To evaluate your health at baseline (start of the program), and to determine how you’re responding to your program, Dr. Ola conducts regular tests. Some of the things she looks for are:

  • Nutritional status
  • Mitochondrial function
  • Amino acids
  • Fatty acids
  • Oxidative stress
  • Vitamin levels
  • Food allergies
  • Presence of heavy metals

Based on the test findings, Dr. Ola may recommend various nutritional adjustments, lifestyle changes, and supportive therapies.

How often do I meet with my health coach?

After your initial consultation, your follow-up appointment is about 6-8 weeks later. You meet with Dr. Ola first, and then with a Medika Wellness Center nutritionist.

A healthy diet is an important part of health coaching because functional medical practitioners are in alignment with the ancient physician Hippocrates, who stated, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”

You continue to meet with your health coaching team every 2-3 months until you’ve achieved your fitness and health goals or your condition is healed.

You may only want to have a health coach for short-term goals, but you can also choose to undergo long-term health coaching. As always, the choice is yours.
