Craniosacral Therapy Q & A

What is craniosacral therapy?

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is also known as cranial osteopathy. It is a soothing, noninvasive, manual technique that was first developed by an American osteopathic physician almost 100 years ago, and then perfected by Dr. John Upledger in the 1970s.

Craniosacral therapy is based on the discovery that the body contains a system called the craniosacral system — which consists of the bones, membranes, fascia, and fluids that protect the brain and spinal cord.

Like your circulatory and pulmonary systems, the craniosacral system pulses and moves at regular, rhythmic intervals.

The movements are a response to your cerebrospinal fluid flowing around the brain and spine at about 6-12 cycles per minute. As the fluid moves, so do the bones in your cranium (skull) and sacrum (base of your pelvis).

While you lie face up on a table, fully clothed, the licensed staff use their hands to detect disturbances in your craniosacral system.

With a light touch of their fingers and hands, they gently move and put pressure on your cranial and sacral bones to optimize the pulse of the cerebrospinal fluid.

What kinds of conditions can CST treat?

Our team usually recommends CST as a restorative treatment that complements other therapies you may need to resolve your symptoms.

However, CST can also be used as a standalone therapy for everyone from infants to seniors. A few of the conditions that respond well to CST include:

  • Chronic pain
  • Joint stiffness
  • Migraines
  • Depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders
  • Autism and learning disorders
  • Coordination problems
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Because CST boosts your body’s healing powers, it can also be used as preventive medicine and to strengthen your immune system.

How long does CST take?

Each relaxing CST session takes about 45-60 minutes. Some CST practitioners describe the treatment as a form of physician-patient meditation, with your doctor sensing where along the spinal column your energy is “stuck.”

He then gently moves your cranial and sacral bones, which in turn manipulate the deeper layers of your fascia and the cerebrospinal fluid

Some women, men, and children experience a complete resolution of their symptoms in just one CST session. However, it’s more usual to need a series of up to five treatments to feel relief and to restore your body’s healing abilities.
