Aromatherapy Q & A

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a healing modality that uses the naturally extracted essences of plants, herbs, and flowers to promote health and harmony in your body, mind, and spirit. Aromatherapy is a completely noninvasive therapy. You derive therapeutic benefits from the essential oils by:

  • Inhaling the fragrant oils directly with an individual inhaler
  • Inhaling the oils indirectly through the use of a diffuser
  • Absorbing the oils through your skin during a massage

A member of our licensed staff will select the type of aromatic oils for your aromatherapy as well as the delivery method based on your unique symptoms and goals.

What kinds of conditions respond to aromatherapy?

Researchers have found that many essential oils reduce inflammation in the body. Dr. Ola and other functional and traditional medical practitioners believe that inflammation is the precursor to many illnesses and diseases, including cancer.

Some conditions that have been shown to respond to aromatherapy include:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Insomnia
  • Inflammation
  • Chronic pain
  • Infections

Aromatherapy has few to no side effects (let us know if you have any allergies), and so it can be combined with many other mind-and-body healing techniques.

How does aromatherapy work?

When you inhale 100% natural essential oils derived from the aromatic parts of plants, the oil molecules stimulate the olfactory receptor sites in your nasal passages.

The olfactory receptor sites then send nerve messages to your limbic brain — one of the oldest parts of your brain — which controls emotions, memories, and arousal.

What kinds of oils are used in aromatherapy?

The team at Medika Holistic Wellness Center only uses 100% natural oils derived from plants, trees, flowers, and herbs.

The oils are derived by pressing the plants directly or with a steaming process. The FDA considers essential oils used in aromatherapy to be safe and has approved most of them as food additives.

Essential oils are highly concentrated: It takes 220 pounds of lavender flowers, for instance, to create just 1 pound of lavender oil. At Medika Holistic Wellness Center, Dr. Ola and her team may choose from a number of essential oils for your aromatherapy, including but not limited to:

  • Lavender
  • Geranium
  • Roman chamomile
  • Bergamot
  • Cedarwood
  • Lemon
  • Tea tree
  • Peppermint
